Grooming a poodle
at home with clippers can be manageable with a little practice and patience.
Poodles have curly, dense coats that require regular trimming to prevent mats
and maintain cleanliness. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
What You’ll Need:
· Dog clippers (with guards of various lengths)
· Blunt-tipped grooming scissors
· Slicker brush and metal comb
· Dog shampoo and conditioner
· Towels and a dog dryer or blow dryer on cool setting
· Ear cleaner and cotton balls
· Nail clippers or grinder
· Detangling spray (optional)
· Grooming table or non-slip surface

Step-by-Step Grooming Instructions:
1. Brush and Detangle
· Brush the entire coat with a slicker brush and then go
over it with a metal comb.
· Remove all mats—clippers won’t go through tangles.
· Use detangling spray on stubborn knots.
2. Bathe and Dry
· Bathe your poodle with dog shampoo and conditioner. Rinse
thoroughly.
· Towel-dry, then use a dog dryer or blow dryer on a cool or
low-heat setting while brushing to straighten the coat. This helps achieve an
even clip.
3. Clip the Body
· Choose a clipper guard length (e.g., #7 or #10 for a
shorter cut, #5 for medium length).
· Start at the neck and work your way down the body,
clipping with the grain of the fur.
· Avoid sensitive areas like joints, nipples, and skin
folds.
· Blend the body into the legs gradually if you're leaving
them fuller.

4. Trim the Legs
· Use a longer clipper guard or scissors to shape the legs.
Poodle styles often keep the legs fluffy and cylindrical.
· Use curved scissors for better shaping.
5. Shave the Face, Feet, and Base of Tail (Poodle
Style)
· Use a #10 blade (or similar) for shaving the face, paws,
and the base of the tail. These areas are typically shaved close in traditional
poodle cuts:
o Face: Carefully trim
from the corner of the eyes outward, and under the jaw.
o Feet: Clip around each
toe, exposing the nails and pads.
o Tail Base: Shave the base, leaving a pom-pom at the end if desired.
6. Trim Around Eyes and Topknot
· Use blunt-tipped scissors to trim around the eyes.
· You can leave the topknot fluffy or shape it round with
scissors.
7. Clean Ears and Trim Nails
· Use ear cleaner and cotton balls (never insert Q-tips into
the ear canal).
· Clip or grind the nails—avoid cutting the quick (pink
part).
Tips:
· Start slowly and give treats often to make grooming a
positive experience.
· Keep clipper blades cool—pause if they get hot to avoid
burning the skin.
· Consider using a grooming harness or helper if your poodle
wiggles a lot.
Optional Grooming Styles:
· Lamb Cut: Short body, fluffy legs.
· Puppy Clip: Even-length all over.
· Continental Clip: Traditional show style (more complex).
If it’s your first
time, start simple and gradually improve as you get comfortable.
